About 20 checkpoints were removed along the River Nile in Unity State, authorities said.
Gatwich Bipal Both, the State government’s spokesperson told this publication on Tuesday that the illegal checkpoints were removed from Panyjinar to Guit County along the River Nile.
He said the operation was conducted by the national government in line with the resolution passed at the 8th Governors’ Forum last year.
Bipal added that the removal of checkpoints along the Nile River has enabled traders to move freeing paying illegal taxes.
However, he said that only four authorized checkpoints were allowed to operate in the four counties of Panyinar, Leer, Mayiendit, Koch, and Guit.
The Leer County commissioner, Stephen Taker confirmed the removal of checkpoints in his area, saying it would help to reduce prices in the market.
“In the next few days to come, commodities prices will reduce from high to normal prices.”
The chairperson of the Boats Union in Leer County, Barrow Dak has welcomed the government’s decision to abolish all illegal checkpoints operating along the River Nile.
According to him, there are an estimated 163 illegal checkpoints along the River Nile from Juba to Renk County of Upper Nile State.
