A top table clash between English Premier League traditional rivals Manchester United and Liverpool ended in a barren draw as the competition nears the end of first leg.
Liverpool fielded a strong team with only Dutch centre back Virgil Van Djik who is on a long term injury break sitting out. A front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino struggled to penetrate the defence of the Red Devils despite the home side enjoying the giant share of possession in the first half.
With Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara pulling strings in the midfield, Jurgen Klopp’s men enjoyed the fluidity and dictated the play but they could not get past Man United’s low block. It took a efforts of sequences of saves from Man United goal keeper David De Gea to stop Liverpool attacks on set pieces to keep the visitors on the game.
Man United started the game with Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani sitting on the bench and replacing Antony Martial later on in the second half. Allison Becker made a crucial save to deny Paul Pogba from few yards in the box to ensure that the Reds see off the game without a loss.
Man United still remains top of the table with 37 points in 18 games after a resurge in their performance mid first leg. Liverpool remains third with 34 points in as many games played, but could even drop deeper should Man City win against Crystal Palace to replace them in the table.
