The South Sudan Handball Federation (SSHB) has teamed up with the International Federation of Handball (IFH) to empower women in handball.

The plan is aimed at promoting women’s participation in handball in the country.

Over 30 women are expected to participate in five-day handball training sessions in several departments in a quest to produce professional female handball coaches, trainers, and referees.

Speaking during the opening session, Dr Nahla Boudhina, International Handball Federation (IHF) facilitator, said South Sudanese women have potential in the sport, adding that it was important for the country to promote it.

“We need our children to understand what handball provides them and for the younger generation to understand it, we need to train those who can teach or train them in the importance of the handball game,”  she explained.

“As a result, we are engaging those women here today to train them to be professional coaches, trainers, as well as referees, “Dr Nahla said.

She urged authorities to include women in handball sporting activities in schools and other various levels of competition.

Dr Nahla pledged the commitment of the  International Handball Federation to support South Sudan to aid the development of the sport.

Ramadan Sadard, vice president of the South Sudan National Handball Federation (SSNH), thanked the IHF for choosing South Sudan as one of the countries in which to train handball.

He noted that as a young country, South Sudan needed to fix itself in sports activities and that having such workshops provided by the International Federation was a great opportunity for the country to learn something new to encourage the development of the country’s diverse sports.
