As the world celebrated Valentine’s Day with flowers and romantic gestures, Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio urged Christians to embrace the true meaning of love rooted in faith, commitment, and family values.

Speaking during the homily to celebrate St. Valentine in Yambio, Bishop Hiiboro reflected on the historical roots of Saint Valentine’s actions, emphasizing the saint’s defiance of Emperor Claudius II’s decree, which forbade young soldiers from marrying.

He noted that Saint Valentine’s efforts to uphold the sanctity of marriage were acts of courage that modern society should emulate.

“The spirit of Valentine’s Day has been changed, today, instead of celebrating love as a foundation of life and family, many have turned it into an occasion for fleeting pleasures that undermine the true value of marriage.”

In a call to responsibility, the Vicar General Fr. Thomas Bagbiowia reinforced the message of responsibility, particularly among parents.

He urged them to show love to their children by providing essential needs such as food, shelter, and education.

“Love is not just about words or celebrations, it is about action, parents must take full responsibility for their children, just as Saint Valentine took responsibility for young couples by guiding them toward marriage,” Fr. Bagbiowia stated.

He also cautioned young people against misinterpreting Valentine’s Day, warning against reckless dressing, alcohol consumption, and behaviors that lead to unwanted pregnancies.

He encouraged them to become ambassadors of peace in their communities, following Saint Valentine’s legacy of selfless love and service.

Meanwhile, Bernadita John Bangoya, a young woman attending the Mass, shared her thoughts on the true meaning of Valentine’s Day.

“Happy Valentine’s Day. Today, isn’t just about romantic love. It is about all forms of love. Love for yourself, your friends, your family, and the world around you,” she said.

She urged her fellow youth to recognize that “first love” begins with faith in God, self-belief, and valuing the relationships that shape their lives.

“Let’s spread positivity, uplift one another, and recognize our value. Love leads the way. On this Valentine’s Day, let’s cherish and share the love we have. Our future and our love have the power to transform the world,” she added.

Bishop Hiiboro called on schools, churches, and community leaders to educate young people about the true meaning of Valentine’s Day, ensuring that it becomes a day of reflection, gratitude, and commitment rather than reckless indulgence.
