The South Sudanese National team got first COVID-19 jabs after last month’s Qatar setback where players reportedly tested positive hence were ineligible for a match against Jordan.

The inoculation came ahead of CECAFA U-23 2021 Competition scheduled to commence this week in Ethiopia.

The Bright Stars are still heeling from a disappointment after the team lost three points to Jordan at the FIFA Arab Cup tournament in Doha. At least eight first-team players including one official were tested for Covid-19 positive.

After the team jetted back home, the SSFA President Francis Amin pledged a vaccination campaign against COVID-19 for all players and staff.

“What happened to us was really bad. But again, it is a lesson to the team as well as the whole country. What we can do for us to move forward is that all our players need to vaccinated,” Amin said after receiving his players in Juba.

He added that, “the vaccine is safe and it is the only thing that can make us move forward without disrupting it like what happened in Qatar,” he added.

Mr. Amin further called on members of Local Football Association to take their vaccine, advising that it is for everyone’s importance to have COVID-19 Vaccine.

He warns that SSFA will not include players without the vaccination certificate to participate in the national team.

The National Team U23 is expected to take part in the CECAFA U23 2021 Competition scheduled to commence next week in Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, South Sudan Women Basketball Team landed in Kigali, Rwanda to participate in AfroBasket competitions.

The South Sudan Basketball team is in Group D and will play against Senegal, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The Afro-basketball women qualifiers will take place from July 12- July 15.
