Anxiety and uncertainty have gripped thousands of foreign nationals across South Africa as a deadline set by anti-immigrant groups for undocumented migrants to leave the country approaches.

Over the past week, an estimated 7,000 foreigners — mostly Malawian nationals — have abandoned their homes and gathered with their belongings in open fields, fearing for their safety and livelihoods as the ultimatum takes hold.

The deadline of 30 June was issued by anti-migrant organizations and opposition party ActionSA, demanding that all undocumented foreign residents depart the country.

As the countdown continues, President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke out against the growing sentiment, warning citizens that blaming vulnerable communities is not the answer to South Africa’s deep-seated economic difficulties.

“Scapegoating of vulnerable people will not solve our country’s complex challenges,” the President said on Tuesday, urging calm and caution amid rising tensions.

The situation remains fluid, with families waiting anxiously to see how events unfold before the deadline expires.
