A senior Sudanese politician has been arrested in the capital, Khartoum, Monday morning.

Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman was picked up near his home, his relatives said, according to AFP.

This follows the arrest of two other politicians last week.

Suleiman was a member of the dissolved joint civilian-military government, a task force that tried to dismantle the network established by the former president Omar al-Bashir.

It was also attempting to recover money and assets looted during his three-decade rule.

In October 2021, Sudan’s military seized power and dissolved the transitional government hours after troops arrested Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other senior officials.

The takeover came just weeks before the military was supposed to hand the leadership of the council that runs the country over to civilians. Hamdok and other senior officials were later set free after demands from the neighbouring countries and the international community.

In less than two months after returning to his post in a deal with the coup leaders, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok decided to resign on January 2, 2022, a decision he claimed to save Sudan’s political transition.

However, since the coup, there have been massive demonstrations against the military and at least about 80 protesters have been killed by the security forces, according to the Sudan Doctors’ Committee.
