South Sudan Human Right Commission has condemned what it termed as a ‘targeted shooting’ of Rumbek Diocese Bishop-elect, Rt. Rev. Christian Carlassare.
The human rights body issued a statement condemning the act and called on the government to investigate and bring the perpetrators to book.
“The event leading to this unfortunate development and other relevant information, it’s has become clear that the Bishop-elect was sole target of the attack,” the statement partly read.
“The commission herby condemns this barbaric act in a strongest term possible and urges both the statement and national government to institute an investigation committee to conduct thorough investigation with the aim of holding culprits accountable,” it further read.
The cleric was shot in both lower limbs by two unknown assailants at around 12:45 am on Sunday night.
The assailants stormed his residence at Rumbek Diocese and immediately left the scene after shooting him on both legs. The motive of the attackers is yet to be known.
Bishop Carlassare is now receiving treatment at Rumbek Hospital.
He was elected in March this year to lead congregation of Rumbek Diocese which has not been having bishop following the death of bishop Caesar Mazzolari since 2011.
Mazzolari who was a Comboni Missionary bishop, suddenly died just one week after South Sudan attained independence in July 2011.
