Authorities in Cueibet County in Lakes State have apprehended four people in connection to the killing of two brothers over a love affair. The tragic incident took place on Tuesday a cattle camp.
According to Lakes States acting Minister of Information, William Koji Kirjok, the incident reportedly occurred after a girl’s suitor differed with her brothers, which prompted a clash between two factions at the camp, one on the side of the suitors and the other supporting the girls’ family.
The scuffle led to the shooting and tragic death of the two brothers.
The minister said the apprehended suspects are in custody helping with investigations, while others are being pursued.
Kirjok cautioned the public against taking the law into their hands, saying the law will take its course and those that are responsible will be held accountable.
“We need to live in peace. This state harbors peace and so its residents must also be peaceful. Anyone tampering with peace is tampering with the law and we cannot compromise,” he said.
Confirming the incident, John Maluak Machut, the Executive Director of Cueibet County, said the incident was as a result of armed confrontation over a girl at a cattle camp in Cuibet, and suspects were handed over for questioning.
“We have handed over three suspects including the person suspected of the killing. They are now in police custody,” he confirmed.
Meanwhile, Daniel Laat, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization Coordinator in Lakes State condemned the incident, and urged youths to stop engaging in petty conflicts.
“Some of our people are using girls as their source of wealth. That’s why they are pushing matters to the level of dying while fighting over girls.
“We condemn such acts and urge the government to intervene,” he said, adding:
“It is time we reconsider some practices and empower our youth on how to address such social issues.”
