The Northern Bahr el Ghazal sporting teams returned home with two prizes after shining at the National Unity Day competition in Juba.
After outstanding performances, the NBGS athletic men’s and women’s teams were named victors of the 6th edition of the National Unity Day in Juba.
The group finished as best runner-ups in the other athletic races, and both teams were awarded medals.
The 1500-metre races ended with six medal winners— three each for men and women, with athletes from Great Bahr el Ghazal, dominating and taking all of the medals from both races.
Deng Ang Nhial of Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBS) won the men’s 1500-metre race with a time of 4.18.20, followed by Lakes State’s Abraham Aping Aler with a time of 4.21.34, and Deng Chiliu Duong of Lakes State with a time of 4.23.37. All three were awarded the same medals.
In the other 100-metre and 400-metre races, the Aweil side did their best in both women and men, making them the best ahead of the Western Bahr el Ghazal side this time.
Their good performance at the National Unity Day rewarded them with two trophies, making their governor, Tong Akeen Ngor, happier as he received the team back home yesterday with a smile on his face.
Governor Ngor thanked the participants for their outstanding performances, which earned the state two accolades.
He said the athletes demonstrated the state’s sporting prowess.
“I would like to express my gratitude and admiration to the athletes for winning trophies and medals for our dear state,” Tong said.
“My congratulations go to the sports staff for their outstanding efforts to ensure that NBGs were well represented in the event.”
He also urged the players to keep the same positive attitude as they prepare to represent Northern Bahr El Ghazal State in future tournaments.
“I am encouraging you to continue exercising to maintain your preparation for any future events,” Ngor said.
“I would want to restate our continued commitment to playing our roles in helping you in sports activities.”
