South Sudan has qualified for FIBA AfroBasket 2021 tournament set to be held in Rwanda in August.
The South Sudanese Basketball Federation (SSBF) tweeted: ‘‘Ticket punched to @AfroBasket 2021 in August. Huge congratulations to the players and staff for all their hard work. THANK YOU to all the fans for the incredible support!’’
The team made a comeback to clinch the qualification by winning 69-65.
The match featured a great performance by Kuany Kuany who racked up 21 points to seal the win for the team after a nervy start of the game.
The boys fell in a 12-23 defeat in the Q1 of the game and tried to bridge the gap but fell short, registering 25-40 defeat in the Q2.
They needed convincing wins in the remaining Q3 and Q4 to ensure that they come up with redemption which they did.
The team lost 47-48 in the Q3 but added more efforts to win the last round 69-65 to ensure victory.
In another Group D match, Nigeria beat Rwanda by 64-51 as it registered second victory for the consecutive day.
Yesterday South Sudan lost narrowly to Nigeria by 9-18 in Q1 before winning the Q2 on a score of 21-20. The team then lost Q3 narrowly with 18-19 registering victory of 22-18 in Q4 but losing on the final score of 70-75.
