After years of violent conflict, the people of Tombura County in Western Equatoria State, are cautiously returning to their farms, authorities said Tuesday.
However, local leaders warn that urgent humanitarian support is still needed to prevent a worsening food crisis among displaced families.
Mathew Mabenge, Commissioner of Tombura County revealed that residents have begun clearing their gardens due to the improved security situation following the deployment of organized forces.
According to him, the presence of these forces has restored a degree of calm, allowing free movement within Tombura town and better access to basic food supplies.
Speaking to The City Review from Tombura County, Mabenge lamented that:
“This season brings hope, but hunger still haunts our people, we are calling on the humanitarian organizations to support our displaced families who continue to suffer in St. Mary Parish IDPs Camp, UNMISS Protection Sites, Ayat IDP Camp, and other temporary shelters. Without food and agricultural tools, as they cannot rebuild their lives,” Mabenge said.
While, he reveals that some roads such as those linking Tombura to Yambio and Source-Yubu, have reopened, insecurity persists along the Tombura–Nagero–Wau route, posing a challenge for trade and relief efforts.
Despite these hurdles, Commissioner Mabenge remains optimistic as he assured residents that authorities at county, state, and national levels are committed to securing lasting peace.
“We are working closely with the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) coordinators in Tombura and Yambio to engage humanitarian partners because support for displaced families is not just a need but it’s a necessity for rebuilding Tombura County again,” he added.
Agriculture remains the backbone of Tombura’s economy, and a successful farming season could mark a turning point for the region.
Tombura which have been under inter-communal conflict since 2021, hundreds of people have lost their lives and thousands were displaced.
“We are working closely with the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) coordinators in Tombura and Yambio to engage humanitarian partners because support for displaced families is not just a need but a necessity,” said Mathew Mabenge, Commissioner of Tombura County.
