Authorities in Lakes State have arrested a man suspected of killing his wife of a case of ‘adultery’ in Yirol West County.

Lakes States’ acting Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. Enock Majok Machar confirmed the incident, stating that a man identified as Mayen followed his wife into a room where she was with another man, attacked and killed the wife as the man escaped.

“He followed them and found them in a house. He fought the man but he escaped. He then turned to the wife, attacked and killed her,” the official said, adding that investigations are ongoing to uncover more details.

“When police officers rushed to the scene, they discovered that the lady had died. The man had escaped. The authorities gathered information about the incident,” he added.

Maj. Gen. Majok also confirmed that the suspect was arrested and is detained at Baburzet prison in Yirol West County.

He stated that the suspect should have reported the ‘infidelity’ case to the authorities instead of taking law into his hands.

Civil society activist in Lakes State, Daniel Laat Kon, condemned the action and called on people to avoid taking matters into the hands.

“You don’t have to kill your wife because she has committed adultery. This is something we have to condemn especially considering that we have the law,” he said.

“You have the option of going to court or handle the matter through customary way. But it is not right to kill your wife. You need to think about your children, about the relatives and the dependants.”

Kon said if such acts are allowed to continue, there will be spiral cases and people will go about killing each other.

“Therefore, this is something that we need to condemn. We can embrace dialogue, and also forward those committing the crimes to the police to process them for justice.”
