A 50-year-old woman died on Friday, ten minutes after she was bitten by a snake, authorities in Mayom County of Unity State, confirmed.

About 15 cases of snakebites have been reported in the area in the last two weeks, and this is the first death case so far registered.

Speaking to The City Review, the area County Commissioner, Luke Chierye Riek, said on Monday that the late Nyebany Mathiang Reath was among the flood-displaced people sheltering in Riahah Payam.

“I am now creating awareness of the presence of snakes to the community and advising that you keep areas cleared so as to prevent such attacks,” Chierye said.

On his part, Mose Kai, a resident of Mayom County, said the cases of snake bites were rampant among the flood-displaced populations in Riahah Payam due to lack of space in the area.

“It is unfortunate because even if she spent enough time, she may have still died since there are no medications for snake bites at Mayom County generally hospital,” Kai said.

 “I am appealing to the State and the government to provide us with enough drugs to the areas that are flooded.”
