A peace meeting to discuss Rome and Naivasha talks aimed at uniting Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) and South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOMA) was on Thursday held in Juba.

During this meeting, the interim chairman of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), Maj. Gen. Charles Gituai reminded SSOMA of their need to solve their internal wrangles and work towards embracing peace in the country.

“There is a need to ensure immediate implementation of what has been previously agreed, such as the inclusion of SSOMA in CTSAMVM structures. This will help ensure adherence to the ceasefire and impartial verification of any alleged incidents of violations or non-compliance,” said Gituai, as tweeted by RJMEC’s official page.

He further urged the stakeholders of the peace talks to ensure swift political agreements to fast-track the completion of the processes.

He added, “expedite the political deliberations and conclude a speedy resolution of the root causes of conflicts to ensure they are fully addressed in the course of the ongoing reforms and the permanent constitution-making process.”

SSOMA and the government had talks in Naivasha, Kenya, in March 2021, where the two groups agreed to work together in support of the cessation of hostilities in South Sudan.

The government was represented by the current Minister of Presidential Affairs Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin while SSOMA leaders in attendance were Gen Paul Malong and Pagan Amum.

“This is time to genuinely learn from our experiences, from our few and limited successes, and from our so many mistakes. I would like to express our commitment as SSOMA that we have come here with open hearts and genuine commitment to seeking a genuine solution to the problem in our country,” Mr Amum said.

Amum is the leader of the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (R-SPLM) and Gen Malong leader of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A). These two parties operate under the umbrella body SSOMA.
