JUBA – At least two police officers are reportedly killed in a suspected terrorist attack in Tanzanian capital Dar-es-Salaam according to local media reports.
The attack happened at mid-day near French Embassy in the country’s capital according to a statement by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Simon Sirro to The Citizen newspaper.
An eyewitness told the publication that the attacker arrived at Stanbic Bank headquarters and went straight to a police shed that had two policemen and shot them dead at point-blank before confiscating their weapons.
“After taking the weapons he started shooting in the air forcing people close to the area to run away for cover,” Salim Ally, a resident of Kinondoni was quoted to have said.
The IGP said the police managed to gun down the attacker.
“As you can see in that circulating short video clips on social media but our police officers managed to shoot him down, he was holding an SMG,” he said.
Sirro, according to the local publication, hinted that the attack could be intertwined with an insurgency in Northern Mozambique where joint SADC forces are battling jihadists.
