South Sudan veteran politician and leader, General Kuol Manyang Juuk has reiterated the vision of the country’s founding father, Dr. John Garang, saying he envisioned exploiting oil revenue for agricultural production, in a bid to boost food security.

Speaking to Radio Miraya, the Senior Presidential Advisor, who was among key heroes during the liberation struggle, stressed that South Sudanese must follow the vision of the late Dr John Garang, and ensure the proceeds of the resource is used in developing the agricultural sector.

“It is true the oil money made us lazy. We didn’t sweat for it. So, we mismanaged it,” said Gen Manyang.

“Some people became rich through unclear means. We cannot even account for where the money went. Now we are in new debts because of that corruption. Dr Garang’s vision was to use oil to boost agriculture – to buy tractors, build roads and grow our own food. That is the path we must follow,” he emphasized.

Gen. Manyang spoke as the country marked the historic Martyrs Day, celebrated every 30 July, to commemorate the death of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Following a peace agreement, Dr. Garang briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005. Garang died in 2005 on his way back to Sudan after visiting Uganda.

The country also commemorates Martyrs Day in honour of those who paid the ultimate price for independence.

On Wednesday, various leaders paid tribute to Dr. Garang, remembering him as a selfless leader who championed peace and development.

“We bow our heads in honour of Dr. John Garang de Mabior and all the heroes who paid the ultimate price to give us our flag, our freedom, and a home to call our own,” noted Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, the Vice President for Economic Cluster, in his Martyrs Day tribute.

For President Salva Kiir, the day marks an important chapter in the country’s history. In his speech, the head of state said: “We celebrate the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and independence of the of the Republic of South Sudan. On this day, we pay tribute to our founding leader, Dr. John Garang de Mabior, and to all those courageous individuals who stood firm through years of struggle, giving their lives so that future generations might live in a free and sovereign nation.”
