JUBA – South Sudan has been awarded 20 points and a win against Cameroon in the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 tournament currently underway in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Technical Committee of FIBA AfroBasket 2021 issued a statement yesterday nullifying the game in favor of South Sudan, on grounds that Cameroon failed to observe the COVID-19 protocols policing the tournament.
“Based on FIBA Central Board decision made in March 2021 for FIBA official competitions in regards of COVID-19 situations…the Cameroon team lost the game D2 per forfeit; the game is awarded to South Sudan and the score in 20 to 0. Cameroon team will receive 0 classification points,’’ the technical committee says in a press statement seen by the City Review.
Elsewhere, Cape Verde made a statement with a narrow victory of 77-71 over serial champions Angola in the opening fixture.
Egypt thrashed the Central African Republic 72-56, while Tunisia drabbed Guinea 82- 46 as hosts, Rwanda also prevailed over Congo with an 82-68 win.
