The African Union has resolved to deploy the AU Panel of the Wise to Juba to avert the escalating political tensions in the country.

This move aims to assist in de-escalating tensions and facilitate dialogue among concerned parties.

The African Union also called on all South Sudanese leaders to recommit to dialogue, cooperation, and respect for human rights.

In a statement released on Thursday, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, expressed deep concerns over the news about the detention of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.

He emphasized on the need for de-escalation and adherence to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

“The African Union underscores the imperative for all stakeholders to de-escalate the situation, uphold the spirit and letter of the peace agreement,” he stated.

He called upon all the parties to recommit to the principles of dialogue, cooperation, and respect for human rights as essential pillars of a peaceful and prosperous South Sudan.

Youssouf highlighted the AU’s dedication to promoting stability and inclusive governance in the region.

“The well-being of the South Sudanese people must remain the foremost priority, and all efforts must be directed towards ensuring an environment conducive to lasting peace and development,” he stated.

The detention of Dr. Machar has raised concerns about the stability of the peace process in South Sudan.
