Authorities in Lakes State are investigating the death of a police officer in Mayath Payam of Cueibet County on Monday night.

Police spokesperson in the state, Major Elijah Makuac, said on Monday, a sergeant from the wildlife service killed a Sergeant Major from the police service after a disagreement between the deceased police officer, who the wildlife officer accused of having an affair with his daughter.

Major Makuac said the wildlife officer confronted the deceased at 10pm after waking him up from sleep at his home, and shot him, killing him on the spot. The suspect then fled, and is yet to be apprehended by the police for questioning, Makuac said.

Abraham Matur Makoi, a civil society activist in Lakes State condemned the incident, saying it is an unfortunate that the killing was done by a trained officer from the organized force

“He should not have gone to the extremes of taking another person’s life being that he is an officer from the organized forces. The organized forces are not supposed to take the law into their hands.  This case would have been taken up by the community leaders and reported to local chiefs and investigated at the local level, socially,” he said, vehemently condemning the incident and castigating the perpetrator.

“As a trained officer, you need to know that there are customary laws that deals with certain issues, such as someone eloping with a girl, or inappropriate engagement. But what happened in Cueibet county, is unfortunate and does not reflect the spirit of responsibility and countability in the law. Especially from an individual who should uphold it and enforce it.”

“I appeal to the state government to deeply screen these individuals to ensure there is proper training such that all the officers that are in Lakes State abide by the law. This is the only way they will ensure that members of the community are able to also respect the law.”
