JUBA – Authorities in Aweil Town of Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal say they are detaining an 18-year-old boy who killed his brother over unpaid debt worth SSP350.
The boy identified as Bol Madut Dut Yel killed his 16-year-old cousin brother Yel Madut Yel for not paying the money when he demanded.
Sources from Aweil town told City Review that the two brothers engaged in a verbal confrontation after Yel declined to pay the money he borrowed on an unspecified date.
As the misunderstanding ensued, the pair involved in a fistfight on a Wednesday at 4 PM local time. One of the sources said Madut grabbed an axed and chopped his brother to death.
“They were demanding each other money, so they started quarreling and the 18-year-old boy grabbed an axe and cut the 16-year-old,” the source told City Review on condition of anonymity.
Eyewitnesses say an attempt to calm Mr. Madut from violently attacking his cousin brother was fruitless as animosity between the two got out of control.
This publication was also informed that after sustaining life-threatening injuries from the gruesome attack inflicted by Madut, the brother made his way to collect a police form so he could rush to the hospital. But it was too late.
“The fight started at 4 pm on Wednesday and Yel Madut Yel went to the police station to pick form eight saying that he wanted to go to the hospital, he did not make it, he died from there,” the source revealed.
“The boy only came to the police but not even to report about the case. Due to much pain he went to the police at 3 am and the boy was bleeding so much,” the source said.
According to the reports, the 16-year-old boy could not file a case about the fighting incident partly because of fear of supposed repercussions.
Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Police Spokesperson, Capt. Guot Guot Akol confirmed the incident and said Madut is in police custody.
The incident came after a woman from the same town set herself on fire after a misunderstanding with the husband linked to marital infidelity.
