JUBA – Viral photos of a bride running away from a wedding venue flooded social media platforms over the week.

In one of the photos, the bride with a veil could be seen running flunked by a woman and the bridegroom to her left. Behind, a multitude of people could be seen running in a desperate attempt to catch up with the trio.

The woman in a striped dress and the bridegroom dressed in a plain black suit with a yellowish bow tie appear to be stopping the bride from leaving the venue.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, social media users assigned their own locations of the incident through descriptive but misleading captions.

The first copy of the picture obtained by the City Review Fact-checking Desk had a caption that claims that the bride ran from Zimbabwe’s Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM), a local church in the Southern African Country.

The South Sudanese online audience took the pictures and assigned them their own meanings; a bride runs away from Kator Church (in Juba) after discovering that the husband does work at an oil company.

What all those claims had in common is that the incident happened within the last five days.

Our finding

After doing a reverse search on Google, the City Review Fact-checking Desk retrieved 136 copies of one of these images.

A further verification search revealed that the incident happened in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria.

The story was first published by The Gazelle News on 15th August 2016 and was republished by GhanaWeb, a reputable online Ghanaian newspaper on 16th August 2016.

However, both papers confirmed that the bride indeed ran away after discovering that the man she was about to marry was not an employee at Chevron Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation and one of the largest oil producers in the West African country as he claims on his social media profiles.
