Facebook has indefinitely banned US President Donald Trump following his social media posts that incited protests in the US. Capitol on Wednesday leading to deaths and arrest of dozens.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that the decision comes as a way of checking on the excesses of Mr Trump, who has continued making unsubstantiated allegations radicalising his supporters.

“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” Zuckerberg wrote.

“Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”

Twitter on Wednesday blocked Mr Trump and went ahead and warned him of punitive measures if he would continue using the platform to make baseless rigging claims.

On Wednesday, chaotic scenes were witnessed in the capital as supporters of Trump climbed the secured walls to stop the Congress from upholding Joe Biden’s victory.

The US media reported that four deaths and 52 arrests were noted during the chaos, which forced the police to wield pistols to prevent protesters from storming the Congress. Nonetheless, they engaged the police in running battles and left a trail of destruction as legislators sneaked out of the chambers for their safety.

But just a day after the ugly melee, the Congress certified Mr Biden’s win even as Trump reneged on his earlier stand and promised an ‘orderly and smooth’ transition come January 20.

Trump’s second term ends in January 20, 2021, and is expected to hand over to President-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris.
