A judge sentenced a former US police officer from Minneapolis to 22 and half years imprisonment after the cop was found guilty of murder in George Floyd’s case.
The court jailed Derek Chauvin (pictured) following the May 25, 2020, botched arrest of Mr Floyd, who died in the hands of the cop after the latter knelt on his neck for minutes till he passed out and later died.
Mr Chauvin was found guilty of three counts of murder on April 21.
The charges included second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The case was presided over by 12 jurors.
Judge Peter Cahill who announced the court verdict also communicated technical steps involved in the case, where sentencing was to be done in eight weeks’ time.
The defence team was to table its arguments in one week then a pre-sentencing investigation report will then follow and is to be returned in four weeks. A briefing on this pre-sentencing will come in six months.
George Floyd’s death caused massive protest in the US that spilt over to parts of Europe as people called for justice for the family of the late.
The US press reported celebration out of the courtroom as some US citizens hailed the court verdict as they chanted ‘‘justice’’.
