It took a 68th minute overhead bicycle kick from Olivier Giroud for Chelsea to beat the stubborn defence of Atletico Madrid and nick a 1-0 win.
The Uefa Champions League round of 16 match which was played at Arena Nationala in Bucharest, Romania, had no fans but the stakes were unchanged. Diego Simeone lined up a strong team led by Luis Suarez and Joao Felix— who have both terrorised defences in Spain.
Thomas Tuchel went with Olivier Giroud in front, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi on the wings. The Blues enjoyed the giant possession of the game but failed to get a goal against the Atleti side which sat deep in a low block.
In the 68th minute, Chelsea got the lead after Giroud scored a bicycle kick after the ball had bounced off the leg of Atletico Madrid defender. The goal was initially ruled offside but was later awarded after the VAR check.
“We came here with strong intentions to win, play our game, and we knew how we could give them trouble offensively. We have been strong at the back, in [our] defensive shape, and we’re very pleased with the win. It was a deserved win. I did not know what to think about the goal, I just focused on hitting the overhead kick and was pleased to see it go in. Good for the team, good for me,” Giroud told the media after the game, as quoted by Uefa.com.
Atletico Madrid will have to travel to London next month with an intention of getting an away win with exception of a 1-0.
“We’ll go over to London with the idea of winning the game. We’ll bounce back from this. It’s been a tough week but we need to carry on fighting and competing. We know we need to go to London and win. If we score twice, we go through,’’ said Koke, Atleti skipper as he addressed the media.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich hit Lazio 4-1 with Lewandowski, Musiala and Leroy Sane all getting into the score sheet.
