The Abyei area has witnessed some level of tension over the past few days following an armed attack by gunmen on a police station on Monday.

In a statement to the media on Tuesday, Abyei Administrative area Minister of Information Bulis Koch Aguar said: “The attack was in retaliation for the killing of an individual by the police.”

“This attack came after another attack that took place on the 7th of this month, where a person was being held in the police station in Abyei town on suspicion of committing a crime, but his armed relatives stormed the station, and tried to release him. The police clashed with them, which led to the death of an officer named Deng Alor.”

“After that, the security services conducted a search operation on Friday targeting those involved in the attack. Eight of them were arrested but one remained at large and was later arrested later on Saturday.”

“After the arrest, we went and informed the family of the late officer to maintain calm and wait for the law to take its course. We have requested a judge from Juba to start the trial.”

However, the officer’s family attacked the police station yesterday, killing four people.

He added that the new attackers are still at large. The security situation is tense and has taken the line of a clan related conflict.

Head of Department for Health, Dr. Rou Manyiel Rou confirmed the death of four people, saying one person was injured and is currently undergoing treatment at Abyei Hospital.

“We have received four dead bodies and one injured person, confirming that the incident occurred at the police station.”
