President Salva Kiir held a meeting with Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Juba on Friday, where they discussed the security concerns and restoration of peace in South Sudan. Odinga, who has been tasked by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to assess the situation in the country, arrived in the capital as part of his mission to facilitate dialogue among South Sudanese leaders.

The discussions centered on the need to restore lasting peace in South Sudan, a country that has faced persistent conflicts and instability since gaining independence in 2011. Raila Odinga’s visit is part of a broader regional initiative aimed at encouraging dialogue, reconciliation, and sustainable peacebuilding efforts.

During their meeting, President Kiir and Odinga emphasized that stability in South Sudan is vital not only for the country but for the entire East African region. They acknowledged that insecurity in South Sudan has spillover effects on neighboring nations, affecting trade, movement, and economic growth.

Speaking after the meeting, Raila Odinga highlighted the importance of continued diplomatic engagement and political will in achieving peace. He noted that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done to ensure that all parties remain committed to implementing peace agreements.

“South Sudan’s peace is critical for the stability of the region. We urge all leaders to come together, set aside their differences, and prioritize dialogue,” Odinga stated.

President Kiir expressed appreciation for the regional efforts and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to foster peace. He emphasized that the people of South Sudan deserve to live in a peaceful environment where they can rebuild their lives and develop their nation.

Odinga’s mission in Juba also included meetings with other key government officials, opposition leaders, and civil society representatives. He sought firsthand information on the challenges facing the implementation of peace agreements, particularly issues related to security, governance, and humanitarian concerns.

After concluding his fact-finding mission, Odinga is expected to return to IGAD with a comprehensive report detailing his findings and recommendations. His report will be instrumental in guiding regional efforts to strengthen peace initiatives and foster cooperation among South Sudanese leaders.

Regional leaders and international partners have continued to emphasize the urgency of a lasting resolution to South Sudan’s challenges. The African Union, IGAD, and the United Nations have consistently called for inclusive dialogue and the full implementation of the peace agreement signed in 2018.

The visit by Odinga signifies Kenya’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s stability, given the deep historical ties between the two countries. Kenya has played a pivotal role in mediating peace efforts in South Sudan, and its leaders continue to push for dialogue and reconciliation.

As South Sudan navigates its journey toward stability, the role of regional and international actors remains critical in ensuring that the country achieves durable peace. The meeting between Kiir and Odinga marks another step toward fostering unity and addressing the challenges that hinder peace in the young nation.
