The Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster, Rebecca Nyandeng is expected to return home within two weeks following the improvement in her health condition, Office Manager Michael Mabior Abum has revealed.

Nyandeng, who is now taking a rest in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, had been ailing with goitre, which had led to a swelling in her thyroid gland, prompting her to be flown to the United Arab Emirates for surgery.

According to Mabior, she was discharged from the hospital last week and she is now taking full rest with a lot of improvement in her health.

“In two weeks, she will be in Juba because her health condition has improved and she is taking the medication as directed by the doctors,” Mabior told The City Review in a telephone interview from Nairobi yesterday.

“People in Juba should not be worried about her health condition because she is getting full rest and she will join them soon, “he added.

Surgery

Mabior revealed that the Vice President had a four-hour operation and that she had begun responding very well to the medication.

He said when they returned to Nairobi, the doctors had directed her to continue taking the medication while she is on full rest completely.

Mabior stressed that Nyandeng had been battling goitre for many years and the operation was very successful.

In March 2021, Nyandeng tested positive for COVID-19. She became the third government official to contract the virus after First Vice President Dr Riek Machar, Information Minister Michael Makuei, and later on, Presidential Press Secretary, Ateny Wek Ateny, and the former Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Dier Tong Ngor.

Her test came after she had mild symptoms like flu that caused the recommendation of the test to be performed as a precaution to ensure her safety and that of people close to her.

After recovering from COVID -19, President Salva Kiir has delegated Nyandeng to represent South Sudan at the 76^th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2021, where she led a high-level delegation to New York for the annual event.

When she was there, she met the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Amb. Jeffery Feldman, and discussed the progress of the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement.
