The Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan and representative of Pope Francis arrived in Yambio, Western Equatoria State, on Thursday.
The Nuncio’s historic visit, coming amid ongoing challenges in the region, was made with a call for hope, peace and reconciliation. Multitude of christians and dignitaries gathered at Yambio airport to welcome the Nuncio.
Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tambura Yambio (CDTY), who led the reception, highlighted the significance of the visit.
“This visit brings hope and encouragement to all of us,” Bishop Hiiboro said, thanking both the faithful and state government for their unwavering support.
Representing the state government, James Severino, the State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, assured the Nuncio of improved security across most parts of Western Equatoria, despite ongoing tensions in Tombura County. “This visit is a message of hope and peace for the people of Western Equatoria,” Severino remarked.
The Apostolic Nuncio, speaking on behalf of Pope Francis, said:
“I have come to pray with the people of Western Equatoria and faithful Christians, asking for peace to prevail in this state and across South Sudan,” he said. He emphasized that his visit represents the Pope’s commitment to the people of South Sudan, particularly those in Western Equatoria who missed an opportunity to see the Pontiff during his earlier trip to Juba.
The event also drew notable church leaders, including Archbishop Samuel Enosa Peni of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, underlining the spirit of ecumenical cooperation in the region.
The arrival of the Nuncio is seen as a significant step in advancing peace and reconciliation efforts, particularly in a state deeply affected by conflict. For many, his presence symbolizes renewed hope and a reminder of the global church’s support for South Sudan’s journey toward lasting peace.
The Nuncio’s schedule includes prayer meetings and consultations with local leaders, further cementing his role as a messenger of unity in a region yearning for stability.
