President Salva Kiir has announced the reconstitution of the Council of States.

The president picked nominees from the SPLM-IG, the SPLM-IO and other signatory parties like Other Political Parties (OPP) that are part of the agreement.

The reconstitution comes after the president dissolved the parliament in May 2021, and subsequently named 550 members of the Reconstituted National Transitional Legislative Assembly as per the dictates of the 2018 agreement.

The nominees are expected to be sworn into office latest by Friday, July 9, when the country will be commemorating the independence. The deal stipulates that total members of the council of states will rise from 50 to 100 as the country heads into a dispensation with a fully functional legislature.

This is expected to boost the quest by the government to function smoothly especially on grounds that the legislature will be able to carry out its functions to support the executive.
