Rumbek Diocese Bishop-designate Christian Carlassare (pictured) has said the investigators need to dig the whole truth behind his recent shooting adding such will help in finding reconciliation.

The 43-year-old Italian cleric talked to Avvenire—an Italian religious newspaper—where expressed his willingness to forgive the plotters of his attack but highlighted the need to dig deeper into the cause of the problems. This is after it emerged that three of the suspects arrested in connection with his shooting were serving area priests.

“Only the truth, even if it is painful, will be able to point out what choices we will have to make. It is a great suffering for the church, perhaps necessary for building something on a clean foundation,” he said, as quoted by the Union Catholic Asian News.

Arrested over the April 26 incident is Father John Matiang, who has served in the diocese since the death of another Italian bishop who administered in the diocese.

Reports revealed that the cleric was angling to be picked for the position but The City Review cannot ascertain whether such ambitions may have led to his arrest after the shooting.

Carlassare who spoke from his hospital bed in Nairobu expressed confidence of healing and walking once more. Nonetheless, he appeared concerned about the unity in Rumbek Diocese.

He is quoted saying: “… obviously there is more that needs to be done. I did not come to Rumbek as a chief, but to collaborate with everyone, and our dialogue has always been positive.”
