Security forces have been deployed along the Saura-Yambio-Nzara Road following a deadly attack on two men traveling to Nzara County from Yambio on Monday.

One man was killed, and another was injured after unidentified armed assailants ambushed them and stole their motorbikes.

Speaking to The City Review, acting Commissioner of Police for Western Equatoria State, Maj. Gen. Samuel Tiep confirmed that the victims were rushed to Yambio State Hospital immediately, but unfortunately one succumbed to his injuries later.

“The attack happened at around 7:56 am on February 17, 2025, near Saura Boma. Our forces responded immediately, but the assailants had already fled after shooting the two men and stealing their motorbikes,” he said.

“One of the victims later died in the hospital due to severe gunshot wounds,” Maj. Gen. Tiep said.

Following the incident, residents in Saura Boma were seen fleeing their homes for safety.

However, Maj. Gen. Tiep reassured the public that the situation was under control.

“We have deployed security forces, including old protection forces, to patrol the area and prevent further attacks. There is no need for people to abandon their homes. We are here to protect them and their property,” he added.

According to the medical report from Yambio State Hospital regarding the incident, Dr. Dazanga Emmanuel, a clinical officer at Yambio State Hospital said, “One of the victims was shot in the abdomen and lost a lot of blood before passing away.”

“The other was shot in the right leg and remains under medical attention. The hospital is fully operational, and we are working tirelessly to treat patients,” Dr. Dazanga stated.

Despite ongoing investigations, the perpetrators remain unidentified. Security forces have vowed to track them down and restore calm along the Saura-Yambio route.

Movement along the road has become risky since the sacking of former governor Alfred Futuyo in a Presidential decree issued last week.
