South Sudan mourns the passing of Major General Mary Akuch  Panyang Jot, a revered figure who dedicated her life to service, liberation, and family. General Akuch, a prominent leader within the South Sudan Prison Service, passed away recently due to heart failure at the age of 65; after a two-year battle with illness.

Major General Akuch’s remarkable career spanned decades, beginning as a first Lieutenant Colonel and culminating in the rank of Major General within the South Sudan Prison Service. “General Akuch herself was a tyrant. She was also in the bush. She just didn’t come and get the rank. She acquired those ranks when she was in the bush. She is a liberator,” shared Samuel Ateny, a close relative, emphasizing her deep roots in the struggle for South Sudan’s freedom.

Throughout her distinguished service, General Akuch held significant roles, notably serving as the Director for all women in the women’s services of the South Sudan Prison Service across all the ten states. Her dedication extended beyond administrative duties as she was known for personally supplying uniforms to the prison service and regularly touring prisons across the states, demonstrating her hands-on approach and genuine care for those under her care. Her leadership was characterized by compassion and a deep sense of responsibility as many of her colleague would described. “The General Akuch really without doubt served the prison service,” Ateny recounted, highlighting her unwavering commitment even as her health began to decline.

Beyond her professional achievements, Major General Akuch was a cornerstone of her family and community. She was the beloved wife of Honorable Michael Makuei, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services. A devoted mother of nine  children – five sons and four daughters – and a grandmother, her influence extended far beyond her immediate family.

“She is a caring mother and take responsibility of all the family of ours. There are even some of the other states that are still living in the compound up to now,” Ateny revealed.

The family is currently making arrangements for her burial, which is planned to take place in her compound in Bor.  A committee has been formed to prepare the grave, a process expected to take three days. The exact date for the transfer of the body from Juba to Bor for the burial will be announced once the preparations are complete.

Major General Mary Akuch Panyang Jot leaves behind a legacy of selfless service, courageous leadership, and profound compassion. Her contributions to the South Sudan Prison Service and her role as a loving matriarch will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by the nation.
