The planned 10th anniversary for the independence that was slated for Friday, July 9, will be a low-key event due to the COVID-19.

The City Review has established that the council of ministers held a meeting on Wednesday and proposed that the celebration of Independence Day be done with limited gatherings, possibly from home. The meeting was chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology, Baba Medan, while addressing the council in a televised address communicated the resolutions of the cabinet meeting and encouraged all the South Sudanese to follow the directives of the president.

According to Mr Medan, the citizens will be expected to be glued to their TVs and radio boxes to listen to the presidential speech from State House, Juba, as the country reflects on the 10 years of self-rule.

The deputy minister also said the council had resolved to push forward the swearing-in of the legislators. However, he did not reveal the date when the executive intends to swear in the nominees of the Revitalised Transitional National Legislative Assembly.

Last week, Presidential Spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny revealed that the plan for swearing-in had entered the top stage and that all was set for the D-day.
