The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) Secretariat in Western Equatoria State has stepped up preparations for its upcoming party congress and primary elections, as the party’s acting Chairperson and state’s Secretary Paulino David Simbi announced the arrival of registration machines and briefed aspirants on nomination procedures.
Simbi arrived in Yambio from Juba on Sunday and met party cadres to discuss preparations for the electoral processes, which are expected to begin at the boma, county and state levels.
He urged all counties to ensure that SPLM members are registered ahead of the primaries, emphasizing that the selection of representatives should take into account the population of each county.
“All counties should ensure that SPLM members are registered. The selection of representatives for the primaries should take into account the population of each county,” Simbi said.
Simbi said he had brought identification and registration machines to facilitate the registration of SPLM members across Western Equatoria State.
The move is intended to support the party’s membership registration process ahead of the primaries. However, the number of machines delivered, the registration timetable and the specific arrangements for covering individual counties were not provided in the briefing.
His emphasis on county population also places representation at the centre of the preparations, although further clarification is needed on how population figures will be established and used to determine the number of representatives from each county.
The state party leadership also briefed members interested in contesting for various political positions on how to obtain nomination forms.
The positions discussed include the governorship, seats in the National Parliament as well as the state’s legislature.
The briefing provides aspirants with information on the nomination process as preparations continue. Details on nomination fees, application deadlines and eligibility requirements were not specified in the information provided.
Simbi said the state-level primaries would be conducted after the SPLM Congress Organizing Committee arrives in Western Equatoria State. The committee is currently carrying out activities in other states.
The committee’s arrival is therefore a key step in the next phase of the party’s preparations in Western Equatoria, although no specific arrival date was announced.
Simbi was appointed by the SPLM leadership to oversee the party’s affairs in Western Equatoria State ahead of the elections scheduled for December 22, 2026.
As preparations continue, the registration of party members, arrangements for county representation, nomination procedures and the arrival of the organizing committee remain central issues to watch in the lead-up to the primaries.
