Twic East County Health Department on Wednesday confirmed the first cholera death case.

Dr. Chol Leek, the area health director said three active cases were referred from the Islands within the County.

“As we speak, we have three cases and one person passed on. The one who came after the second case, he passed on before reaching the facility, and the third case is being managed at the health facility in the county,” he said.

“Four days ago, a young man was brought from an island called Pachawei with some signs of Cholera, including diarrhea and vomiting and the person was managed in Mar PHCC but the situation was worsening so he was referred to Bor State Hospital,” Leek said.

Leek said the county health officials are working hard to ensure the people in the county are aware of the outbreak.

“The mitigation that we have put in place is that we have the World Health Organization team and we have formed a county taskforce as well. They are conducting awareness on how they can protect themselves [community] in all Payams of Twic east,” he stated

Leek urged the communities of Twic East County to be vigilant, adding that they should protect themselves from getting the diseases.

“Our people should make sure they cover their latrines and wash their hands always after using the latrines. There are boreholes in the Payams but there is a need to boil drinking water before use,” he said.

As of Tuesday, the Jonglei State Ministry of Health reported 63 Cholera cases, with 3 deaths.
