The government of Jonglei State has strongly condemned what it described as acts of looting and destruction allegedly carried out by elements of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army–In Opposition (SPLM-IO) in Akobo County.

In a statement issued on March 10, Nyamar Lony Thichot, the state’s Ministry of Information and Communication said it was “distressed” to learn about the reported destruction of public and private property in the area on Monday, March 9.

Nyamar alleged that facilities affected include Akobo Hospital, private homes, the local market, telecommunications network towers, and assets belonging to humanitarian organizations operating in the county.

“The Government of Jonglei State condemns in the strongest terms possible these criminal and unlawful acts of looting and destruction of private, government and humanitarian property carried out by SPLM/IO elements that undermine the safety and dignity of civilians in Akobo County,” the statement said.

According to the government, the reported destruction has worsened the situation for civilians already affected by insecurity in the region.

The statement also called on the international community to condemn what it described as “continuous acts of looting and destruction of humanitarian property” allegedly carried out by SPLM/A-IO forces in several parts of the state, including Uror County, Nyirol County and Akobo County.

“The Government of Jonglei State stands in solidarity with the people who lost their property,” said Nyamar.

The reported incident comes amid growing tensions and insecurity in parts of Jonglei State, where communities have faced repeated displacement and disruption to humanitarian services.
