South Sudan has been named among countries of concern that perpetuate violence against the civil population, a report by the US Department of States has revealed.
In the report dated July 12, 2021, the Joe Biden administration signalled South Sudan for failing to stop attacks on civilians and attributed such incidents to military officers and rebel groups.
“In South Sudan, the government has perpetrated extrajudicial killings including ethnic-based killings of civilians, widespread sexual violence, and use of food as a weapon of war. Non-government armed groups also perpetrated unlawful killings, rape, sexual slavery and forces recruitment of children,” the report partly read.
This was the expanded quarterly early-warning assessment of atrocities conducted in 153 countries, up from 99 by the US federal department.
Last month, South Sudan launched the implementation of the Chapter Five of the revitalised peace agreement including the establishment of the AU Hybrid Court to try cases of war crimes.
This will also ensure justice to the victims, reconciliation and repatriations to end the grudges as instigators of another conflict in South Sudan.
Other countries mentioned linked to various atrocities include China, Ethiopia, Iraq and Syria.
