South Sudan Vice President for Gender and Youth cluster, H.E. Rebecca Nyandeng joined thousands of jubilant attendees at the 4th Edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival, a grand celebration of the rich heritage and unity of the Luo people under the theme, “Spirit of the Luo Nation – Luo Unity in Diversity and in the Luo Diaspora.”

The event, hosted at the Migwena Cultural Grounds in Siaya, brought together the Luo community from South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and across the diaspora. It showcased the strength of cultural bonds that transcend borders and generations.

The festival’s official opening was graced by Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, the former Pime Minister of Kenya, who captivated the audience by wearing a South Sudan Basketball t-shirt, proudly labeled “The Giants of Africa.” Raila’s gesture symbolized the interconnectedness of the Luo heritage and its pride in shared achievements.

“Our culture is not just a legacy; it is a living, breathing force that unites us and inspires the future,” Raila declared. “Piny Luo is proof of our resilience and solidarity.”

The VP Nyandeng actively participated in various cultural activities, including water sports, traditional wrestling, and the Tero Buru ceremony—a dynamic showcase of Luo traditions.

Adding a touch of environmental consciousness, Mama Rebecca joined Governors James Orengo (Siaya) and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) in a tree-planting initiative.

This act, which symbolized growth and solidarity, resonated with the festival’s larger purpose of fostering unity among diverse communities. Cultural exhibitions also highlighted the depth and beauty of the Luo traditions, sparking a sense of pride and identity among attendees.

As the celebrations continue until January 2, regional leaders, including President William Ruto of Kenya and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda, are expected to close the festival.
