A 22-year-old man, identified as Obila Ateib, was killed at a traditional dance ceremony in Hiyala Village, Torit County on Monday.
According to local authorities, the man was killed following a disagreement with another at the event, and died while he was being rushed to receive treatment at the hospital.
Confirming the incident to The City Review on Monday, Christopher Andrew, the commissioner for Torit County said the deceased was shot at the event, and died on the way while he was being rushed to hospital.
Angered by the death, the commissioner explained, the family of the deceased were planning to organize a revenge attack, but the authorities got wind and neutralized the plans.
“We received information about the incident and ordered that the injured person be taken to the hospital for treatment immediately even as we took up investigations. Unfortunately, the man died on his way to the hospital,” Andrew said.
“They were at a traditional dance together on Sunday evening. But this morning they disagreed on an issue that we are yet to establish. I have instructed the local authorities and the youth search for the suspect and hand him over for questioning.”
The commissioner advised for restraint, calling on youths to desist from fights and conflicts, and avoid any incitement, including from politicians and other individuals who may use them to satisfy personal interests.
“Let us keep off incidences that risk our lives. Our youth should desist from conflict and avoid listening to anyone who is planning to incite or cause chaos. You should not allow yourselves to be used as charcoal to light fire,” he said.
The Payam has had incidences ranging from conflicts, revenge attacks and cattle rustling in the past, with authorities among other stakeholders exploring various avenues to mitigate the cases.
