The government will settle all the pending provisions of Chapter One of the Revitalised Peace Agreement to fully constitute all the governance structures next week.

Minister of Information, Telecommunication and Postal Service Michael Makuei Lueth who doubles as the Government Spokesperson said this will include the establishment of the government structures at the national and state levels as well as in local government.

“This moment we are almost reaching the end of the road whereby we will now establish all the states and local government institutions and the other remaining national institutions. I hope that by next week we will be in position to establish all these,” Makuei said.

He said this while addressing media during a press briefing at the Ministry’s Conference Hall on Tuesday, on January 19.

It’s close to one year since the start of the formation of the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) in February 2020 without completion.

According to the provision of the Chapter One, key outstanding tasks including the appointment of Upper Nile State governor and his deputy, three deputy governors for Lakes, Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Central Equatoria States were pending.

Earlier, President Salva Kiir objected the appointment of General Johnson Olony, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition’s (SPLM-IO) nominee, citing potential escalation of violence in the state if he was appointed.

The SPLM-IO insisted that creating government vacuum in the state will be halting the progress of state government formation where the stalemate is yet to be appointed.

However, last week, SPLM-IO said Olony would soon arrive in Juba to be appointed governor of Upper Nile following President Kiir appointment of six deputy governors including for Eastern and Western Equatoria, Western Bahr el Ghazal, Warrap, Jonglei and Bentiu states.

Furthermore, the coalition government is yet to establish complete government of the three Administrative Areas of Abyei, Pibor and Ruweng.
