President Salva Kiir has promised to inaugurate members of the reconstituted parliament this week.
This will bring to an end the overdue functions of the parliament that have stalled pending enactment of bills into laws and permanent constitution-making process critical to ending South Sudan’s protected violence.
Addressing Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) caucus members last week, Kiir said MPs have to be sworn in this week without fail.
“You (MPs) were supposed to be sworn in to become the real caucus. We will do it (swearing ceremony) in the coming (this) week. All this time we have been saying that we will do it.
“…it is better that we do it this time so that we relieve ourselves,” reiterated President Kiir.
President Kiir did not mention why the process was overdue since the MPs’ appointment nearly three months ago in May this year.
However, the head of the state, appointing the lawmakers, has issued several other decrees, revoking and appointing members of the reconstituted parliament. The latest was members of Council of States’ appointment early this month.
