JUBA – A high court on Monday sentenced a controversial socialite Amira Ali (pictured) to six months imprisonment for defamation with a fine of 35 million South Sudanese Pound as compensation.

She was indicted for insulting and disparaging the name of former Warrap State Minister of Information and Telecommunication, Nyenagwek Kuol, who is currently the Deputy Minister of Interior.

According to the court, Amira would not serve her jail terms due to her health condition.

Socialite Amira was sentenced to six months in jail for defamation under Article 289 of the Penal Code of South Sudan and a fined One hundred thousand South Sudanese Pound. She will pay SSP35 million as compensation, according to the verdict.

Nyenagwek’s husband Dr. Ajak Makoor who spoke on behalf of his spouse described the ruling as justifiable and relieving.

“The ruling of the court was so defensible and dismissing because the words said against my family were so insulting and hurting,” Dr. Makoor said.

“She is going to be in prison because she was given six months without being effective and fine of SSP100,000 for the court and SSP35 million as compensation for the family that’s why I am not happy,” he stressed.

He said the judgment of the court will serve as a lesson for the rest who are fond of attacking other people’s personalities.

“This a lesson for those who want to defame others and defamation is a crime punishable by law,” Dr. Makoor said.

Amira’s defense Lawyer, Achuil Kuol said the judgment was fair for both sides as the court complied with the health condition of Amira by not taking her to jail.

“She will not serve jail term now because she is under treatment,” he said.
