JUBA – The internal disagreements stemming from the nomination deadlock in the Other Political Parties (OPP) continues to deter the members’ representation in the August house.

On Monday, August 09, the National Pre-Transitional Committee—a body tasked with the implementation of the agreement led by Tut Gatluak—convened an emergency meeting to resolve the stalled nomination process. However, the meeting ended without any resolution.

Albino Akol, the spokesperson of OPP, said Peter Mayen’s group wanted a giant share by nominating 22 of its members out of the 30 slots meant for the entire OPP leaving the other eight seats for the other partners. But this did not augur well with the other parties in the umbrella.

Mr. Akol stressed the two groups in OPP agreed to equally share the 30 seats in R-TNLA and 8 seats in the Council of states.

“One group that comprised of five signatories took 20 seats and another group of umbrella that comprised of one signatory took 10 seats in the R-TNLA; and in the council of states, the group of five took 6 seats out of 8 and umbrella took 2,” he explained.

He added the members resoundingly backed the decision with exception of Mr. Mayen who had already been ousted from party leadership and membership.

He said on August 6, the committee called Mayen to explain to him why his proposal for the nomination was rejected.

“He said he (Mayen) was not available in the first meeting and he could take this because he was disadvantaged so [he wanted] at least 22 [slots] and that was why the meeting was postponed,” Akol revealed.

But according to Akol, the demand from Mayen’s camp is unsustainable given that the agreement gives details of how the slots should be shared fairly. He said the matter would be referred to RJMEC for a solution.

On August 2, the lawmakers to the R-TNLA took their oath after it had been postponed twice in a month.
