At least two people have been confirmed dead and two others injured after a building they were renovating collapsed on them at Konyo Konyo market in Juba.

The Mayor of Juba City Council, Michael Lado Allah-Jabu, said the incident occurred when the builders were trying to renovate one of the shops within the main building.

In a Juba City Council official Facebook post seen by The City Review, Allah-Jabu encouraged the traders and investors to cooperate with the authorities of Juba City Council before putting up structures.

When contacted for comment, Deputy Mayor for Physical Infrastructure, Thiik Thiik Mayardit, said that he was not around when the incident took place.

“By the time the incident happened, I was not around, but you can get the right information from the mayor because he went to the scene and witnessed the incident,” Thiik told The City Review in a telephone interview in the evening.

However, the witness who reported the incident to Eye Radio, Abuna Luke, said those who sustained injuries were in stable condition as they tried to remove the blocks from on top of the deceased.

He said there were four builders seen demolishing the building.

The eyewitness said the builders wanted to renovate one of the rooms in the big building and, in the process, it collapsed, killing two people on the spot and injuring a couple others.
