The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Simon Ober Mawut on Wednesday confirmed the execution of a man convicted of murdering late Abuk Lual in 2022.

Saber Abu Sam, a Sudanese trader was convicted of defiling, murdering, and dumping the body of five-year-old Abuk Lual into a pit latrine in Aweil in 2022.

“The long-awaited justice to the late six-year-old Abuk Lual who was brutally murdered by Saber was finally served on Wednesday 29th January 2025,” the office of the governor has said.

Governor Ober noted that the case had drawn a lot of attention since the tragedy in 2022 and it had been followed by both the public and the victim’s family.

“After years of legal proceedings, the court handed a death sentence to Saber Abu Sam and he was executed by hanging at approximately 2 p.m. South Sudan local time on Wednesday at Wau Central Prison,” he said.

The execution was carried out by Molana Yai Anyoun in the presence of Governor Mawut, the victim’s parents, prison officials and judicial representatives.

Speaking at a press briefing shortly after the execution, Governor Ober  announced that Saber Abu Sam had been put to death by hanging and expressed relief that justice had been done for the soul of the innocent late Abuk Lual.

Governor Ober appreciated the Western Bahr el Ghazal State and national institutions for their cooperation and support to ensure justice was served.

Also, the family of the late Abuk Lual appreciated the Governor for his efforts and engagements with concerned authorities to ensure that justice was served.

Saber Abu Sam was sentenced to death by hanging in June 2022 by Aweil High Court for the gruesome killing of the late Abuk Lual
