The Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro on Thursday announced the beginning of the newly extended transitional period.

He unveiled the statement during the 39th Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) plenary meeting in Juba.

He said it was noted that key provisions necessary for the successful conduct of the elections in 2024 remain largely unimplemented.    

Dr. Lomuro explained the event leading to the decision by the presidency to postpone December 2024.

He said the council of ministers during its extraordinary meeting held on September 14, 2024, resolved to endorse the decision of the Presidency to delay the general election originally scheduled for December 22, 2024.

Dr. Lomuro argued that the decision was based on recommendations from the high-level standing committee that identified substantial delays in the implementation of critical provisions of the agreement.

“I am privileged to have this opportunity to present a statement to the 39th RJMEC plenary on the commencement of the new transitional period and the plan of action for the implementation of the ongoing and remaining tasks of the R-ARCSS.”

“On behalf of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, I sit before you today to formally announce the commencement of the new transitional period as endorsed by the Council of Ministers and approved by the RJMEC and the Transitional Legislative Assembly of the Republic of South Sudan,” Dr. Lomuro said.
