Security forces have arrested more than 600 suspected gang members in an intensified crackdown on criminal activity following public outrage over the recent assault on a teenager in Sherikat.
The Deputy Governor of Central Equatoria State, Hon. Paulino Lukudu Obede, announced the sweeping arrests on social media, stating that a total of 623 individuals allegedly linked to various violent gangs were apprehended in recent days. The targeted groups include 4SG Slime, West Cost, ODA, Killers Gangs, Black Devils, and others believed to be behind a wave of terror that has gripped the capital.
“So far, security forces in all sectors of Juba have arrested 623 gang members. We applaud our security organs for their efforts,” said Hon. Leon Abe Brown, Central Equatoria State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency.
These gangs have been accused of committing crimes ranging from theft and assault to sexual violence, including the harrowing rape incident in Sherikat that sparked widespread anger and calls for urgent action.
The 16-year-old Sherikat rape victim, who remains under medical care, became a symbol of the growing insecurity in residential areas of Juba.
Then followed closely, an attack of a journalist who was hit on the head with a blunt object and robbed of his gadgets.
In response to these escalated criminal incidences, local police launched a seven-day operation targeting criminal gangs.
The operation, announced on Monday by the Deputy Minister of Interior and the Inspector General of Police, involves targeted searches and investigations in identified crime hotspots.
Police spokesperson Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka stated that the operation aims to dismantle unruly groups and restore public safety.
Following the incident last week, police apprehended seven suspects, who are currently detained awaiting trial.
During the arrest operation, authorities reportedly uncovered disturbing and shocking items believed to be associated with witchcraft and voodoo practices on their tools further intensifying concerns about the influence of such gangs in their operation areas.
Police say the operation is part of the ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the capital and restore public safety.
This incident reignited debate over the safety of women and girls in the capital, prompting renewed appeals for tougher measures against gangs and better protection for civilians.
Community leaders and activists have welcomed the crackdown but are demanding long-term strategies to prevent youth involvement in crime, including rehabilitation, education, and job creation.
Authorities have urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activity and refraining from harboring gang members in neighborhoods.
The Central Equatoria State government says it will continue its operations to dismantle gang networks and restore peace and order across the capital.
