The long-awaited grand finale of the sixth edition of the Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament is finally here, and the stage is set for a thrilling clash as Baiparu Residential Area the defending champions lock horns with Naduru, the one-time title winners, this Sunday at Yambio Freedom Square.
Baiparu booked their place in the final after edging out two-time champions Kuzee residential Area in a tense 2–1 victory that electrified the crowd on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, Naduru stormed into the final with a convincing 4–1 win over Kpirabe Residential Area on Tuesday.
The tournament, which began with 32 residential areas, has now come down to two football giants who have each tasted glory before and are now hungry to reclaim it again.
“Baiparu showed the heart of champions. They’ve reminded everyone why they’re the team to beat,” said Samuel Bazia, a diehard Baiparu fan waving their team flag after the match.
On the other side, Naduru supporters are equally optimistic. “We’re not new to this stage. We’ve been here before. This year, the trophy is coming back home,” said Rebecca Nambue, a Naduru loyalist who has followed the team since the early group stages.
The tournament has captivated the attention of thousands across Yambio and beyond, drawing residents from across Western Equatoria State to witness what has now become one of the largest grassroots football events in South Sudan.
This year’s tournament has not only been about goals and glory. It has also served as a platform for unity, peace, and youth development.
“We’ve seen incredible discipline, talent, and camaraderie and this is not just football this is social transformation in motion,” said Victor Maku, a sports enthusiast based in Yambio.
The final match is set for this Sunday at Yambio Freedom Square, a venue that has seen its fair share of drama and celebration in past editions. Organizers expect record-breaking crowds, and security has been beefed up to ensure a peaceful and entertaining atmosphere.
This year’s tournament is proudly sponsored by Fauna & Flora, an international conservation NGO working to preserve biodiversity and promote peace in local communities.
“Supporting youth through sports aligns with our mission to build peaceful and resilient societies. We’re proud to be part of this amazing journey,” said a representative from the sponsoring company.
As excitement builds, fans across the city are already gearing up for a showdown that promises edge-of-the-seat action.
“Win or lose, it’s about celebrating our youth and coming together. May the best team win!” said Adufa Michael, a neutral fan of Nabiapai, who were knocked out at group stage of the tournament.
With both teams in top form and an entire city behind them, the Baiparu vs. Naduru final promises fireworks. Whether you’re cheering from the stands or tuning in from home, this is one match Yambio will not forget.
