Abyei Chief Administrator, Charles Abyei Jok, held a meeting with representatives from Caritas Australia, led by Kur Alor Kur, to address implementation of education projects in the region.

Caritas Australia promised to secure more funding to support the area complete education projects.

“Today, we convened a meeting with His Excellency Justice Charles Abyei Jok, the Chief Administrator of the Abyei Special Administrative Area, to discuss the ongoing educational initiative within the Abyei area.The principal emphasis of our discussions was on the revitalization of the project and strategies for acquiring supplementary funding. We are currently grappling with significant challenges associated with the initiative,” said Alor Kur.

Abyei area, located in the border region between Sudan and South Sudan has faced various challenges in its education sector. These include insecurity, lack of teachers and schools.

The disputed area has faced severe insecurity, witnessing violent attacks, from armed youth, disrupting academic calender events.

“In South Sudan, we follow a unified academic calendar where schools typically commence on February 5 after the conclusion of the previous academic year. However, due to the insecurity in Abyei, I submitted a proposal to the Council of Ministers to delay school reopening for two weeks,” Nyinkuany Aguer, at the time Minister of Education in the region, told Radio Tamazuj.  

In Abyei, Caritas Australia supports students with scholarships among other eduucation programs.
